Life Lessons I Learned from My Father

When I reflect on where I learned my most significant life lessons, I always return to my father's words.

He was the sole breadwinner of our family, and we managed on very little. Thanks to my mom’s money management, we always had food, even if everything else was limited.

I recall once, as a 12-year-old, telling my dad, “I wish we won the lottery!”

He smiled and asked, “And what would happen then?”

I said, “We would move into a big house, buy a car… we would be so happy!”

He asked, “Aren’t we happy already?”

I said, “Yes… but we would be happier!!”

And then he said something I didn’t understand until much later

“If those things make you happy, I hope you get them. But I am already content. I work honestly, have my family, a roof over my head, food to eat, and I can educate my kids. That is everything I ever wanted.”

Years later, after I had the house, the car, and the career, I realized something was missing.

That is when his words made sense.

That is when my journey toward clarity, values, and purpose truly began.

Here are a few lessons from him that will always stay with me:

  • Everyone has their own story. No one’s point of view is absolutely right or wrong.

  • Dream big, but learn to enjoy and appreciate what you already have.

  • Every setback prepares you for something greater.

  • Be adaptable and face life with courage and grace.

Some of what he said didn’t make sense then, but today, it means everything.

As they say, you realize your parents were right when your kids start telling you that you are wrong! 🙂
