Not long ago, my son shared a problem with me. Almost immediately, I jumped into problem-solving mode. He cut me off and said, frustrated:
“Papa, just listen. I think I know what to do.”
That was a big realization. Even though I pride myself on being a good listener, I realized how often I may have done this with colleagues, friends, or even my spouse.
Sometimes, all someone needs is silence and presence — not advice.
Here are 3 small practices that help:
Pause, listen, and hold space → validates feelings and makes people feel heard
Ask curious questions, don't advice → empowers others to find their own answers
Apply it to yourself → when self-criticism arises, pause and show self-compassion → shifts self-doubt into awareness and confidence
Benefits I’ve seen:
Stronger relationships
More meaningful conversations
Greater self-confidence
I’d love to hear — how do you practice pausing and listening in your daily life?
